Edge of the Forest Exhibition

A travelling textile exhibition featuring Canadian members of the Surface Design Association

Edge of the Forest is an exciting exhibition of textile art by 53 artists from across Canada who are members of the Surface Design Association.  This juried exhibition of textile art features weaving, felt work, quilts, printing, machine and hand stitched work and other techniques that give structure, pattern and colour to textile. The exhibition is designed to travel across Canada to provide Canadian artists an opportunity to showcase their work in local venues.  It aims to introduce the viewers to the variety and beauty of textile art, as well as to inspire other artists to explore these art forms.

The Edge of the Forest team would like to thank the following sponsors for their financial support and encouragement.

  • Surface Design Association
  • Ontario Arts Council
  • Mayor of Richmond Hill

Edge of the Forest Team is pleased to announce the recipient of the “Award of Excellence” in memory of Mary Frances Fox to Gloria Daly of Duncan, British Columbia.  Mary Frances Fox was an SDA Ontario Representative and textile artist who inspired us with the original concept for this exhibition.

Judith Martin, SDA sanctioned juror, comments on Gloria’s piece entitled “Sanctuary”.

The simplicity of the archetype cross shape grounds the design, and draws the viewer from across the room.  Close inspection of the mix of interesting stitches and multiple layers that the artist placed with care and consideration is a reward for a heart and mind.  Impeccable workmanship throughout, including the finishing.  Everything in this piece invites and deserves contemplation.  So many of the pieces were strong in this exhibition.  Congratulations to all the artists and to the organizers.

Special thank you to Jane Kenyon for the use of her Landscape image.
